Shopify can calculate sales tax, VAT, or GST at checkout once you tell it where you are registered. It does not register you, file returns, or decide nexus. This is not tax advice. Laws differ by country, state, and product. Confirm rates and obligations with a qualified accountant or the tax authority. Screens move; use Shopify Help Center: taxes and setting up taxes.
Quick answer
Register with the authorities first. Then in Settings → Taxes and duties, turn on collection for each region where you have a tax ID. Assign product categories from Shopify’s Standard Product Taxonomy so Shopify Tax (where available) can apply exemptions and reduced rates more accurately. In Markets, set how prices display tax (included vs added at checkout) for that market. US sales tax, EU VAT, and GST are different regimes—do not copy a US store’s checkboxes into another country.
What Shopify can and cannot do
Shopify documents that available tax services depend on where the business is based. In broad terms Help currently lists Shopify Tax for merchants selling into the United States, European Union, United Kingdom, and Canada; Basic Tax for some other regions (Help has listed examples such as Australia, New Zealand, and Singapore); and Manual Tax or third-party tax apps where Shopify’s automatic service does not apply. Feature lists change. Open Taxes and duties and Help’s “choose a tax service” page for your store. Do not assume Shopify Tax is on, or that Basic Tax matches Shopify Tax.
Shopify updates many default rates. You still confirm they are correct for you. Overrides exist for exceptions. Wrong collection is a liability; Shopify Support will not pick your product category for you.
US vs other regions (do not use one playbook)
United States. You generally collect in states where you have nexus (a connection the state treats as enough to require collection—physical presence, inventory, economic thresholds, and other tests your counsel will name). Shopify does not declare nexus for you. After you register, Help’s path is Settings → Taxes and duties → United States → add states → enter sales tax ID → Collect taxes. Some states tax shipping; Help lists advanced shipping-tax options for certain states. Leave defaults if you are unsure, then ask a US tax professional. See US tax setup.
Canada. GST/HST and provincial taxes are a separate Help path (Canadian taxes). Thresholds and “based in Canada vs not” rules are accountant work.
EU and UK. VAT registration, OSS, and micro-business options are documented under EU tax setup. Enter the registration type you actually have. Inventing an OSS number in admin does not create a filing.
GST and other regions. If Help offers Basic Tax or Manual Tax for your country, follow that article—not a US nexus blog. Inclusive pricing is common in some markets and not in others.
Step-by-step: turn collection on
- Decide where you must collect. If you do not know, stop and get advice. Do not “turn on all countries.”
- Settings → Taxes and duties. Open the country or region. Click the collect / register control Shopify shows. Enter the tax number when you have it; Help allows leaving it blank while an application is pending in some flows—update it when the ID arrives.
- Repeat for each additional region you are registered in. Markets may also expose tax and duty controls per market.
- Product categories. On each product, set a category from the taxonomy. Shopify uses this for many Shopify Tax calculations. An override on a collection beats the category. See product categories and tax.
- Overrides only for real exceptions (Help: tax overrides). Do not zero-rate the catalog to “look cheaper.”
- Tax display. In Markets, choose whether that market shows tax-inclusive prices. US shoppers usually expect tax at checkout; many VAT countries expect inclusive prices. Dynamic tax-inclusive pricing is a Markets setting, not a theme snippet.
- Place a test order to an address in a registered region and one outside. Read the tax line on the order.
Import duties are not the same as sales tax. Collecting duties at checkout is covered in international shipping. Currency is currency and language.
Common mistakes
- Collecting tax in a state or country with no registration.
- Leaving every product uncategorized, then fighting Shopify Tax with random overrides.
- Inclusive prices in a market that expects exclusive, or the reverse.
- Treating a tax app as a filing service it is not.
- Copying another brand’s VAT number onto invoices.
What to do next
Match the tax line to checkout tests. Keep the password on until the launch checklist is honest. Hub: Shopify 101. Pillar: complete guide.
Configuring the admin is a merchant task. Filing and nexus stay with you and your accountant. If you later need theme work so prices read clearly, AalphaLeo Digital Solutions (+91 9288621081) can help. They will not give tax advice.
Frequently asked questions
Does Shopify file my taxes?
Shopify may offer automated filing products in some regions and plans. Treat that as optional and confirm in Help and your accountant’s process. Calculation at checkout is not a filed return.
Do I need Shopify Tax?
Use the service Help lists for your business location. If Shopify Tax is offered, it is usually less manual than maintaining rates yourself. If it is not offered, Basic Tax, Manual Tax, or a documented app is the path—not a US-only tutorial.
Are product categories the same as product type?
No. Product category is Shopify’s taxonomy (tax and channels). Product type is your own label. Set the category even if you already use a type.
Should I charge tax on shipping?
Depends on the jurisdiction. Shopify exposes shipping-tax options in some US states. Default plus professional advice beats guessing.
