Google Search Console (GSC) is how you verify the store, submit Shopify’s sitemap, and inspect how Google crawled a URL. It does not rank the shop. It does not replace unique product and collection copy. Screens in GSC and Shopify admin change; the durable sequence is: password off → choose a property typeverify with a method Google still lists → submit sitemap.xml → use URL Inspection on real pages.

Official steps live in Google’s Help, not in a theme screenshot. Property types: Add a website property. Ownership: Verify your site ownership. Sitemaps: Manage your sitemaps. Inspection: URL Inspection tool. Shopify’s generated sitemap, canonicals, and robots.txt are in the SEO overview.

Quick answer

Connect the custom domain you will use in public. Turn Online Store password off so Googlebot can fetch pages. In Search Console, add a Domain property (example.com, DNS TXT at the registrar or wherever DNS is hosted) or a URL-prefix property (https://www.example.com/ exactly). Domain covers http/https and www/non-www; URL-prefix matches only that prefix. After verification, open Sitemaps and submit sitemap.xml (Shopify serves this on the storefront). Then inspect the homepage, a collection, and a product. Do not expect overnight coverage. Beginner SEO still applies: Shopify SEO for beginners.

Password off first

A password page is not your catalog. Googlebot hitting the password wall cannot index products. Keep password on while you build; turn it off when you intend the store to be public—same rule as launch. Verification tokens can be placed while password is on; useful crawl data cannot. If you must test GSC before launch, understand that reports will reflect the password URL, not the shop.

HTML file upload is often a poor fit on Shopify because you cannot drop an arbitrary file at the site root the way a static host can. Prefer DNS (Domain) or a method Shopify can keep in the theme or a Google-owned tag.

Domain property vs URL-prefix property

Google’s table is the source. Summary:

Domain property. You enter example.com (no https://). It includes all subdomains and protocols. Verification is DNS record only (typically a TXT record). Use this when you control DNS for the brand domain—including domains bought through Shopify, if DNS is on Shopify’s servers; add the TXT where Shopify documents DNS for that domain.

URL-prefix property. You enter the full prefix, including protocol and trailing path rules Google shows, e.g. https://www.example.com/. http is not https. www is not the apex. Verification methods can include HTML tag, Google Analytics, Google Tag Manager, or HTML file—whatever the wizard lists for that property.

For most Shopify stores on a custom domain, Domain is the complete picture. URL-prefix is valid if you only care about one exact origin, or you cannot touch DNS yet. If you create three URL-prefix properties for http, https, and www, you split reports. That is an operator mistake, not a ranking trick.

Shopify may also expose a Google verification field in Online Store preferences on some setups. Confirm in your admin. If you paste an HTML tag into theme.liquid, a theme switch can drop verification. Google recommends a backup method: verification Help. GA4 as a verification method requires the Analytics tag on the homepage for an account you can access—see GA4 for Shopify.

Submit the sitemap

Shopify generates XML sitemaps. On a live storefront they are typically reachable at https://your-domain/sitemap.xml (an index of child sitemaps for products, collections, pages, blogs). You do not hand-build that file.

In GSC: Sitemaps → enter sitemap.xml → Submit. “Success” means Google could fetch the sitemap. It does not mean every URL is indexed. Filter combinations are usually not the job of this file—faceted navigation. Canonicals on the pages themselves still matter: Shopify canonical URLs explained.

Inspect URLs

Use URL Inspection on URLs you care about. Request indexing only for pages that are public, canonical, and worth crawling—not every variant query string. Live test vs last crawl can differ. Indexing timing is Google’s. Technical SEO is the deeper crawl map.

Core Web Vitals in GSC need field data; do not invent a score. When the report exists, use Shopify Core Web Vitals.

Common mistakes

  • Verifying https://store.myshopify.com and then launching only on the custom domain without a property for the public host.
  • URL-prefix on http:// while the store redirects to https://.
  • Leaving password on and wondering why coverage is empty.
  • Treating sitemap “Success” as “we are indexed.”
  • Inspecting a filtered URL you never intended to rank.

What to do next

Verify, submit sitemap.xml, inspect three URLs. Then set up GA4 so Search and Analytics can be associated later in each product’s current UI. Hub: Shopify 101 category, complete Shopify 101 guide.

Frequently asked questions

Should I verify Domain or URL prefix?

If you control DNS for the brand domain, Domain is usually the right default (all protocols and www). URL-prefix is correct when you need one exact origin or cannot add a DNS record. Follow Google’s property types.

Where is Shopify’s sitemap?

On the live storefront, /sitemap.xml. Submit that path in GSC. Shopify maintains it as the catalog changes. Confirm the file loads in a browser while logged out.

Why does URL Inspection say crawled but not indexed?

Google chooses what to index. Thin duplicates, password history, canonical to another URL, or quality issues can all apply. Inspection explains this URL; it is not a ranking report.

Can I use Search Console while the store is password-protected?

You can add a property. You cannot get a useful index of products until Googlebot can fetch them. Turn the password off when you are ready for the public web.
