Creating a Shopify store is more than signing up. You provision an account, fill store details, add at least one real product, connect payments and shipping, publish policies, then remove the store password. The onboarding screens Shopify shows will change. This tutorial is the durable sequence. Field-level clicks belong in Shopify Help Center: getting started.
If you only need the signup flow, use how to create a Shopify account. This page is the whole first store.
Quick answer
Go to shopify.com, start a trial with an email you control, complete onboarding, then work in this order: Settings (details, billing, payments, shipping) → Online Store (password on, theme later) → Products → Pages (refund, shipping, privacy) → test checkout → connect a domain when the name is stable → turn the password off. You cannot take live card payments without an active plan and payments setup as Shopify requires in your region. US promotions on 29 August 2026 included a short trial and $1 months; those are not the list price. See pricing.
What you need before you start
- Email you check, plus recovery.
- Country and currency you will sell in (harder to unwind than a logo).
- A store name you can live with legally. Tutorial: choose a Shopify store name.
- One product you can photograph, price, and ship (or a defined digital delivery).
- Time the same week for policies. An empty theme is not a store.
Step 1: Create the account and store
- Open Shopify’s start/trial call to action for your region.
- Use a real email and answers that match the legal business.
- Bookmark
your-store.myshopify.com/admin. - Confirm email if Shopify sends one.
- Skip the App Store. Do not install a stack of apps on day one.
Details and troubleshooting: create a Shopify account.
Step 2: Store details and settings
In Settings, fill store name, address, customer email, and phone. Wrong country and address create tax and payout pain. Walk the settings map in how to set up Shopify store settings and business information. Set currency and language for the market you will actually serve.
Keep Online Store → Preferences password on until checkout works.
Step 3: Theme (minimum)
Pick a free theme from Shopify’s Theme Store or stay on the default. Publish it. Do not buy a $350 theme before you have products. Homepage polish is a later design cluster in this hub. For now: logo, colors you can reverse, and a navigation that will hold Collections and Policies.
Step 4: One real product
Add a product with title, price, photo, and weight if you ship. Inventory quantity should be true. A product named “Example T-shirt” trains you to ship fiction. Catalog depth comes later in Shopify 101; launch needs one honest SKU.
Step 5: Payments
Settings → Payments. If Shopify Payments is offered, complete the identity and payout details Shopify asks for. If it is not, choose a supported third-party gateway and read the extra Shopify transaction fee on Shopify’s pricing page. You cannot skip this and call the store created.
Step 6: Shipping or pickup
Settings → Shipping and delivery. Add a zone and a rate, or local pickup, for the places you will sell. A store that cannot quote shipping cannot complete checkout.
Step 7: Checkout and required pages
Review checkout settings. Create Shipping, Refund, Privacy, and Terms (and Contact) as real pages—not lorem ipsum. Tutorial: important pages for a Shopify store. Payment processors and customers both read these.
Step 8: Test, then go public
- Place a test order if Shopify’s payments test mode or a small live order is available in your setup.
- Connect a custom domain when the brand name is stable.
- Use the launch checklist before password-off.
- Turn the password off only when you intend to take orders. That is launch. See how to launch a Shopify store.
Common mistakes
- Calling signup “we have a store.”
- Installing apps and a paid theme before a product exists.
- Turning the password off with no shipping rate.
- Entering a fake address to “just look around.”
- Picking a plan from a YouTube thumbnail instead of choosing a plan against your volume.
What to do next
Keep Shopify terminology open. The complete Shopify 101 guide maps theme, collections, taxes, and SEO after this path.
You can complete this sequence without an agency. If you want a partner for setup, theme development, or a launch you do not want to staff yourself, AalphaLeo Digital Solutions offers Shopify store setup and launch support. Phone / WhatsApp: +91 9288621081. That is optional. The checklist above is not.
Frequently asked questions
How long does it take to create a store?
Signup is minutes. A store that can take an honest order is usually days to a couple of weeks, depending on photos, policies, and shipping. Anyone promising “a store in 20 minutes” is describing a theme, not operations.
Can I create a store without a domain?
Yes. You get a myshopify.com URL. Connect a custom domain before ads and public launch if you care about the URL customers see.
Do I need a company before I sign up?
Shopify will ask for business details for payments. Use information that matches the legal entity that will receive payouts. This is not legal advice; ask your accountant if you are unsure.
When do I pick a paid plan?
When Shopify requires it for live payments in your region, and when you understand list price vs promotion. Do not prepay yearly until the store name and country are stable.
