You create a Shopify store by signing up on Shopify’s site, answering onboarding questions, and landing in admin with a myshopify.com URL. The exact screens change. This tutorial describes the durable sequence: account, store, password, settings. For field-level help, use Shopify Help Center: getting started while you click.
Quick answer
Go to shopify.com, start a trial, use a real email you control, complete the questionnaire Shopify shows, then open Settings and fill store name, address, and customer email. Leave the store password on until you are ready for the public. Pick a paid plan only when you understand pricing. Shopify advertised a 3-day trial and a $1/month promotional period on its US pricing page as of 29 August 2026; those offers change and may require a card.
What you need before starting
- An email inbox you check (plus recovery).
- Legal store name ideas (you can rename later; domain is harder).
- Business country and currency you will sell in.
- Time for Settings the same day you sign up. An empty trial teaches nothing.
Optional but useful: a domain you already own, product photos, and a one-sentence offer (“We sell X to Y”).
Step-by-step: create the account
- Open shopify.com and choose the start/trial call to action Shopify shows in your region.
- Enter email, password, and store purpose answers as prompted. Use information that matches the legal business you will operate. Fake addresses create payout and tax pain later.
- Wait for Shopify to provision the store. You will receive a myshopify.com admin URL. Bookmark it.
- Confirm the email if Shopify sends a confirmation.
- Skip the App Store and theme marketplace until products exist. Theme tours are fine; installing five apps is not.
If Shopify asks for a credit card to continue a promotion, read the renewal price. Promotional $1 months become list price.
Step-by-step: first hour in admin
Do this in order. Do not customize fonts yet.
- Settings → Store details. Legal name, customer email, store address, phone. This feeds invoices and some notifications.
- Settings → Billing. Know which trial or plan you are on.
- Online Store → Preferences. Store password: keep it on until policies and a few products exist. A password store is not a public launch.
- Settings → Payments. See whether Shopify Payments is offered. If it is not, plan a supported gateway and read the third-party fee on Shopify’s pricing page.
- Settings → Shipping and delivery. You cannot “launch” without at least one shipping method for the zones you will sell to (or a defined local pickup).
- Content / Pages. Create stub Shipping, Refund, and Privacy pages and replace lorem ipsum before password-off. Payment processors and shoppers both read these.
- Products. Add one real product with a real price, weight (if you ship), and photo. A demo product named “Example” trains you to ship fiction.
Store name vs domain vs myshopify.com
- Store name is the brand string in admin and emails.
- myshopify.com is the working hostname.
- Custom domain is what customers should type. Connecting DNS is a later Shopify 101 tutorial. You can sell on myshopify.com during testing; switch before paid ads if you care about the URL on the ad.
Common mistakes
- Signing up with a throwaway email, then losing the store.
- Turning the password off with no products and no policies.
- Picking a theme pack and calling it a brand.
- Entering the wrong country—tax and payments follow that choice.
- Ignoring billing emails until a paid plan starts.
Troubleshooting
I did not get the email. Check spam, wait, use Shopify’s login help. Do not create a second store unless you intend to.
I cannot find admin. Use your-store.myshopify.com/admin.
The site looks empty. The Online Store shows the published theme. Add a product and a menu. Password-protected stores look “broken” to friends who do not have the password.
Shopify wants a plan immediately. You can explore admin on a trial; you cannot process live card payments without completing payments setup and an active plan as Shopify requires in your region.
What to do next
Read what Shopify is and how Shopify works if admin still feels random. Keep the terminology list nearby. Continue with how to create a Shopify store, then connect a domain and the launch checklist. The complete Shopify 101 guide maps theme, collections, taxes, and SEO after launch.
You do not need an agency to create an account. If you later need custom theme development or a full build, AalphaLeo Digital Solutions is one option (+91 9288621081). Finish this checklist yourself first.
Frequently asked questions
Is the trial enough to learn?
It is enough to click every Settings area and add a product. It is not enough to learn shipping exceptions and tax. Keep a calendar reminder for when the promotion ends.
Can I have more than one store?
Yes, as separate Shopify stores (and separate bills). Plus expansion stores are a different product. Do not duplicate catalogs without a reason.
Can I pause a store?
Shopify documents pause/close options that depend on plan and region. Read the current Help Center article before you assume a cheap pause exists.
When should I connect a domain?
After the store name is stable and you are within a week of password-off. Connecting early is fine if you already own the domain.
