Nobody can sell you a guaranteed citation in Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT browsing, Perplexity, or any other assistant. Those systems choose sources by their own retrieval and ranking. Publishers can only improve eligibility and distinctiveness.
Google’s AI features documentation is the clearest public baseline for Google: be indexed and snippet-eligible. Other products do not publish an equivalent FACTASH-verified checklist. Do not pretend they do.
Make the page a source worth retrieving
Assistants that cite the web still need a URL with a clear claim, supporting detail, and preferably a date. Thin listicles that restate other listicles are easy to skip.
Write:
- a specific audience and task;
- evidence you can point to (official docs, methods, limitations);
- what you did not measure.
The people-first content questions are a good editorial test even when the reader is a model selecting passages.
Be findable as a stable document
Use one canonical URL. Keep important sentences in HTML. Link internally with crawlable anchors. See how to optimize for AI search and the AI SEO playbook.
Cite so you can be cited
Link to primary sources in context. Name the organization. If you summarize a spec, say so. Pages that hide provenance are weaker sources for any system that tries to show a supporting link.
Do not build for a rumor file
llms.txt, hidden keyword blocks, and “answer chunks” that contradict the visible article are not Google Search requirements. They can harm readers. Skip them unless a named product you use documents a real, current mechanism—and even then, test.
Measure honestly
You can count branded search, referrals you actually see in analytics, and Search Console performance. You cannot honestly report an “AI citation rate” FACTASH did not collect. If a vendor dashboard shows mentions, treat it as that vendor’s metric, with its own definition.
Getting cited is a side effect of being a clear, crawlable, distinctive source. It is not a campaign type with a guaranteed yield.
