AI search features still depend on ordinary web pages that people and crawlers can use. Google’s documentation on AI features and your website states that a page must be indexed and eligible to appear in Search with a snippet before it can be used as a supporting link in AI Overviews or AI Mode. The same page says there are no extra technical requirements unique to those features.

That is the starting point. Optimization is not a secret file, a special schema type, or a rewrite written only for models.

Treat eligibility as a baseline, not a ranking promise

Search Essentials is explicit: meeting Google’s requirements does not guarantee crawling, indexing, ranking, or inclusion in any particular result. An AI search program should improve access, usefulness, and maintainability. It should not claim traffic that no publisher controls.

Google’s guide to optimizing for generative AI features sends site owners back to foundational work: valuable non-commodity content, a clear technical structure, a reasonable page experience, relevant media where it helps, and measurement in Search Console. It also says Google Search does not require llms.txt, special AI markup, artificial chunking, or AI-only rewrites.

Fix access before you rewrite copy

A strong explanation cannot be retrieved if the URL is blocked, broken, or marked noindex by mistake. Before drafting “AI-ready” outlines, confirm:

  • intended pages return a success status and a stable canonical URL;
  • robots rules and meta robots match the index intent;
  • important copy is in HTML, not only behind a click that crawlers may not execute;
  • internal links to those URLs are ordinary crawlable <a href> links.

The FACTASH AI SEO playbook turns those checks into a site-wide operating queue. The enterprise technical SEO checklist covers crawl, index, and template controls in more depth.

Write for the task, then connect the follow-up questions

AI features can draw on related material around a topic. That does not mean you should publish a thin page for every query variant. It means each URL should have a job, and related jobs should be reachable.

For each important page, record the audience, the task, what FACTASH uniquely contributes, and what the page will not claim. Then link:

  • from a broad operating guide to a focused implementation guide;
  • from a procedure to the concept it assumes;
  • from an evaluation page to the next decision.

Descriptive anchors help people. Mechanical quotas do not. See the internal linking strategy.

Represent the page honestly

Titles, headings, canonicals, and structured data should match visible content. Do not add Review, FAQ, or HowTo schema unless the page actually contains that material. Do not invent statistics, case studies, or “citation rates.”

If you use generative tools in the workflow, keep a human owner for facts, sources, and publication. The AI automation workflows guide explains review gates for marketing systems; the same discipline applies to editorial pages.

Measure what you can see

Use Search Console for coverage, experience, and query reporting as Google documents it. Treat AI-feature reporting as one input among others. A drop or rise in a single report is not proof that a tactic “worked” unless you can connect it to a real change you made and a plausible mechanism.

A short working sequence

  1. Inventory indexable URLs and their jobs.
  2. Repair access and canonical conflicts.
  3. Improve or merge overlapping pages instead of adding near-duplicates.
  4. Strengthen internal paths for real reader tasks.
  5. Align metadata and structured data with the visible page.
  6. Review Search Console and editorial quality on a fixed cadence.

That sequence is how you optimize for AI search in 2026: make the site eligible, useful, and true. Nothing in this guide guarantees a citation, an Overview placement, or a traffic outcome.
