How to Set Up Email Marketing for Shopify

Set up Shopify email marketing with native Shopify Email first, consent at checkout, then an ESP only when list and flows need it. Screens change; confirm admin.

Shopify email marketing is consent, a from-address people can reply to, and messages you will actually send. It is not an ESP logo on week one and not a promised open-rate championship. Start with native Shopify Email (many admins label this under Shopify Messaging). Move to an external ESP when list operations, branching flows, or SMS as a staffed channel outgrow what native covers. Admin labels move. Use Shopify Help: promoting and marketing for the live click-path.

Quick answer

Collect email only when the shopper opts in (checkout marketing checkbox and/or a form you honor). In admin, open Marketing (or Messaging) and complete Shopify Email: sender name, reply-to you monitor, and domain authentication Shopify currently requires (SPF/DKIM—follow Help, not a 2023 screenshot). Send one campaign to a segment you have, or enable automations Shopify ships if they appear in your plan. Abandoned checkout is a separate recovery job: how to recover abandoned Shopify carts. Do not install two email platforms. Hub: Shopify 101 category.

What you need before you start

  • A store that can complete checkout. Email does not fix a missing shipping rate. See checkout setup.
  • Privacy policy language that matches what you do with addresses: important pages.
  • A public or soon-public store if you expect real subscribers—password-on stores still collect test emails you should not blast.
  • Time to send. An unused ESP is a second admin, not a list.

Launch sequence if you are not live: launch checklist and how to launch a Shopify store.

At Settings → Checkout, marketing opt-in wording must match the email you send. Do not pre-tick consent where the law or Shopify’s current checkout rules require an active choice—follow your region and Help. Theme newsletter blocks and popup apps are extra capture; each is a theme embed and a speed cost. One capture owner. Do not buy a list.

Unsubscribe must work. Shopify Email and reputable ESPs handle this; stacking two systems often double-sends or ignores unsubscribes.

Step 2: Native Shopify Email / Messaging

  1. Open Marketing in admin (path may read Messaging). Install or open Shopify Email if Shopify still ships it as an app on your shop.
  2. Set from name and from/reply addresses you control. Customers reply to shipping questions here.
  3. Authenticate the sending domain as Shopify currently documents in Help. Skipping this is how you land in spam.
  4. Confirm included send volume on your plan. Extra sends bill on Shopify’s published Messaging rules; those figures change—do not freeze a blog’s number.
  5. Create a campaign: one offer or one story, links to live products, UTM only if you will read them in GA4 or Shopify reports.
  6. Send to a real segment (for example accepted marketing), not “all customers including people who never opted in.”

Native is enough for occasional campaigns, Shopify’s templates, and automations that appear in your admin. It is not a full lifecycle suite for a team that lives in flows all day.

Step 3: Automations Shopify already offers

Welcome and related templates exist when Messaging/Email shows them. Abandoned checkout is often included on plans that list it—confirm in your admin, then use the recovery tutorial rather than duplicating it in an ESP. Do not enable three “win-back” flows on a 40-person list.

Step 4: When an ESP is the job

Look at an ESP when you need branching flows native does not have, list hygiene and billing at a size native is awkward for, or SMS/WhatsApp as a channel you will staff and consent for. Evaluation criteria and App Store illustrations (not a trophy table) live in best Shopify email marketing apps. One ESP. Turn native abandoned checkout off if the ESP owns that event, or you will double-email.

Common mistakes

  • Buying Klaviyo (or any ESP) before a first native campaign.
  • Collecting email with no privacy sentence and no send plan.
  • Two ESPs “to test.”
  • Measuring success as open rate instead of orders Shopify can attribute to the campaign.
  • Using email as a substitute for Google Ads or Meta ads when you have no list.

What to do next

Send one honest campaign. Enable abandoned checkout recovery if your plan shows it. Keep email as the staffed channel or add one other job from the marketing guide. Testing cadence without invented lifts: CRO growth framework. Pillar: Shopify 101 complete guide.

You can complete native email without an agency. If you want a second pair of eyes on native vs ESP for a store that already has a catalog, AalphaLeo Digital Solutions can review that job. Phone / WhatsApp: +91 9288621081. Optional.

Frequently asked questions

Is Shopify Email enough?

Yes when campaigns and Shopify’s automations match how you send. An ESP is for list, flow, and SMS jobs native does not cover—not a default upgrade.

Do I need a marketing app to send email?

Usually no. Native Email/Messaging is the start. Apps belong when the job is bigger; see the email apps shortlist.

Can I email everyone who placed an order?

Transactional mail (order, shipping) is not the same as marketing. Marketing needs consent as your checkout and law require. When unsure, ask counsel; this is not legal advice.

Will email increase conversion by a set percent?

This article will not invent one. Measure revenue Shopify attributes to the send in your reports.
