Checkout cannot finish if Shopify has no rate (or pickup method) for the shopper’s address. You set rates in Settings → Shipping and delivery, on a shipping profile, not in the theme. Admin labels move; use Shopify Help Center: fulfillment and shipping setup when a screen does not match this page. This is operational guidance, not carrier-contract or tax advice.
Quick answer
Open Shipping and delivery. Use the general profile (or a custom profile for products that ship from a different place or with different rules). Add zones, then add rates: flat, weight-based, price-based, or carrier-calculated if your plan and account allow live carrier quotes. Put real weights (and origin address) on products. Place a test checkout to every zone you claim to serve. Do not advertise “free worldwide shipping” if the profile has no matching free rate.
What a shipping profile is
A profile groups products that share the same shipping origin and the same set of zones/rates. The general profile covers products you have not assigned elsewhere. Create extra profiles when some SKUs ship from another warehouse, are oversized, or must never use the cheap envelope rate.
Profiles are not Markets and not a theme. Wrong profile assignment is a common “why is this $80 to ship a sticker?” bug.
You still need a complete store settings address. Carriers and shoppers both use the location you ship from.
Choose a rate type
Pick the simplest model you can fulfill at the price you quote.
Flat rate. One price per zone (for example “Standard $8”). Easy to explain. Easy to lose money if a 10 kg order uses the same rate as a postcard.
Weight-based. Tiers by order weight (0–0.5 kg, 0.5–2 kg, and so on). Requires honest product weights. If weights are zero, every order looks like a letter.
Price-based. Tiers by order value (free over a threshold, paid below). Useful for “free shipping over $X” in zones you actually ship to. A storewide banner that ignores zones is how you get unprofitable international orders.
Carrier-calculated. Shopify requests a live quote from a connected carrier using weight, dimensions, and destination. Accuracy depends on product data and the carrier account. On Shopify’s public US pricing table fetched 29 August 2026 from shopify.com/pricing, third-party calculated shipping rates were listed as an add-on on Grow and included on Advanced and Plus. Confirm the current feature list in admin and Help Center before you budget; promotions are not list price, and invoices differ by country. Plan context: Shopify pricing and plans and choose the right Shopify plan.
Local pickup is a delivery method, not a homepage sentence. Offer it in shipping settings if you will actually hand the order over.
Step-by-step: add rates
- Settings → Shipping and delivery.
- Open the profile that should own these products (general or custom).
- Confirm shipping origin (location). This must be where parcels actually leave.
- Add or edit a zone (countries/regions). Zone design is covered in the sibling zones article; do not skip it.
- Add rate. Name it the way customers should see it (“Standard,” “Express”)—not “Rate 1.”
- Choose flat, weight conditions, price conditions, or a calculated carrier option your account supports.
- Save. Repeat for each zone you intend to sell into. A missing zone means checkout blocks that address.
- Assign products to custom profiles if they should not use the general rates.
For field-level clicks, follow Shopify’s fulfillment setup help linked above. Do not copy another store’s dollar amounts; your costs are not theirs.
Product weights and dimensions
Weight-based and carrier-calculated rates fail quietly when products have no weight. Edit each product (and variants that differ). Use the same unit the profile expects.
Dimensions matter for calculated rates and for packing. If you leave boxes empty in the carrier app, quotes will not match the label you buy later.
Test with a heavy SKU and a light SKU. If both quote the same flat rate, that is your design—or a missing weight.
Test at checkout
Rates exist to appear at Shopify Checkout. Admin tables are not proof.
- Keep the store password on.
- Add a product to cart.
- Enter an address in a zone you configured, then one you did not.
- Confirm the named rates and amounts. Confirm the excluded country cannot complete (or is handled by rest-of-world on purpose).
- Repeat after you change weights.
Payments must also be connected or the test order cannot finish: set up payments. Gateways do not create shipping quotes.
Do not promise what the profile does not do
Marketing copy, announcement bars, and product pages must match rates. “Free worldwide shipping” with paid US-only rates is a complaint generator and, depending on advertising rules in your market, a compliance problem—talk to your own advisor. If you only ship domestic, say so. If international is a different profile with higher rates, say so.
Shipping and Markets interact (who can buy, which catalog). Currency display is separate: currency and language.
Common mistakes
- Zero product weights and “why is everything the letter rate?”
- One flat worldwide rate that loses money on remote destinations.
- Carrier-calculated rates enabled without weights or a carrier account.
- Assuming Grow includes third-party calculated rates because a screenshot from Advanced said so.
- Customizing checkout style before a rate appears: optimize checkout is later.
- Overlapping zones that show duplicate or conflicting rates (fix in zone config).
What to do next
Configure zones so every country you sell to has a deliberate rate or an explicit block. Then complete payments and checkout, and walk the store launch checklist. New shops start with create a Shopify store. This tutorial sits in Shopify 101; see the complete Shopify 101 guide for order.
Rate setup is a merchant operations task. If you later need theme work around a working cart and checkout, AalphaLeo Digital Solutions (+91 9288621081) can help. Enter real weights and one test address yourself first.
Frequently asked questions
Why doesn’t checkout show any shipping?
No rate for that country/region, no pickup method, the product is on a profile without that zone, or the item is marked as not requiring shipping when it should. Check the profile assignment, then Help Center.
Should I use free shipping to convert better?
Free shipping is a price decision, not a setting trophy. Fund it with product price or a threshold, and limit it to zones you can afford. This page does not invent a conversion rate for free shipping.
Do I need Plus for carrier rates?
Not necessarily. On the 29 August 2026 US table, third-party calculated rates were an add-on on Grow and included on Advanced and Plus. Your admin is authoritative.
Can apps replace shipping profiles?
Some apps add rules. They also add failure points. Start with native profiles. Add an app only if a documented gap remains.
