Shopify can be a good fit for a small business that needs a hosted storefront, checkout, and admin without running its own ecommerce server. It is a poor fit if you expected a free shop, a marketing department, or a platform that ranks you in Google by itself. This page uses Shopify’s public US pricing table as fetched from shopify.com/pricing on 29 August 2026. Your invoice can differ by country, currency, and offers in admin.

Quick answer

Shopify is good for many small businesses when you want one vendor for hosting and checkout, you can pay a subscription plus card fees, and you will still do catalog, policies, shipping, and demand. It is not automatically good if your catalog is three SKUs on a marketplace, if Shopify Payments is unavailable and extra gateway fees wipe the margin, or if nobody will answer customers and fulfill orders. US list price on that date started at Basic $39/month ($29/month billed yearly), plus Shopify Payments card rates (Basic listed 2.9% + 30¢ online) and optional apps. Promotions such as a short trial and $1 months are not the long-term cost.

What “small business” means here

This article assumes a founder or a tiny team: a few dozen to a few hundred SKUs, domestic shipping or local pickup, and no dedicated IT department. Wholesale, multi-warehouse, or custom checkout is a different conversation—see Shopify pricing and plans and Shopify vs other ecommerce platforms.

Pros that actually matter

  • Hosted checkout and admin. You do not patch the ecommerce core. Shopify states it is certified Level 1 PCI DSS compliant and that stores on the platform are PCI compliant by default. Treat that as a reason to stay inside their checkout, not a reason to skip fraud review.
  • A path from trial to live store. Account, theme, products, payments, and shipping live in one admin. The account tutorial covers the first hour.
  • Channels when they are available. Online Store plus optional POS, Shop, or social channels—availability is country- and product-specific.
  • Staff can learn admin without being developers. Theme code and checkout changes are a different skill.

Cons you should price in

  • It is not free. Subscription, processing, domain, apps, email tools, and shipping labels add up. Yearly Basic at $29/month is still a real line item before the first sale.
  • Control has a ceiling. Checkout customization, reports, and staff seats change by plan. Plus is a different commercial product.
  • You still own the hard work. Photos, policies, inventory truth, packing, and ads are not included.
  • App sprawl. Each app is extra cost and extra JavaScript. A small store that installs ten “must-have” apps can feel slower and more expensive than a clean Basic store.
  • Country fit. Payments, taxes, and some features depend on where the store is registered. Open Shopify’s pricing and Payments pages for your country.

POS Pro was listed at $89/month per location on that US table if you need retail POS beyond casual use. Skip it until you have a location that needs it.

Shopify advertised a 3-day trial and a $1/month for 3 months offer on that date. Model the list price.

When Shopify is a good fit

  • You sell physical or digital products and need a cart, not a link-in-bio with hope.
  • You want hosted checkout more than you want to assemble WordPress plugins.
  • Someone will complete store settings, payments, shipping, and policy pages before password-off.
  • You can name a fulfillment method (self, 3PL, or pickup) before launch.

When it is a weak fit

  • Your only sales are already working on Etsy or Amazon and you have no reason to own a URL yet.
  • You need a unique checkout or ERP-heavy wholesale on day one and have not budgeted Plus or a specialist.
  • You cannot describe shipping or returns in writing.
  • You expected Shopify to replace a photographer, accountant, or media buyer.

Frequently asked questions

Can a one-person shop run Shopify?

Yes, if that person will also pack orders and answer email. The software does not staff the business.

Is Basic enough?

Often, for a solo founder using Shopify Payments with a small catalog. Revisit when staff seats, reports, or card-rate math say otherwise. Details: how to choose the right Shopify plan.

Does Shopify take a cut of sales besides processing?

The subscription is separate from card rates. If you use a third-party payment provider, Shopify listed an extra transaction fee by plan on that US table. Apps and themes are separate vendors.

Will Shopify make us look professional?

A theme can look clean. Professional is policies, photos, stock that matches the site, and shipping that arrives when you said it would.
