A variant is one sellable combination of a product’s options—for example Size = M and Color = Navy. Options are the axes (Size, Color). Variants are the SKUs those axes create. You add them on the product in Products. Screens move; the model does not. Use Shopify Help Center: variants for the current editor and limits.

Create the parent product first: how to add products to Shopify. If you do not have a store yet: how to create a Shopify store. Keep Shopify terminology open so “variant” does not get used as a synonym for “collection.”

Quick answer

On the product, add options (name + values). Shopify generates variants from those combinations. Give each variant its own SKU, price if it differs, inventory quantity, and image when the look changes. Check current option and variant limits in Help Center and in the product editor before you design a huge matrix—do not treat a forum screenshot as the cap. If two “options” are really different products (different shipping, different legal claims, different care), split them. Track stock per variant so one size can sell out without hiding the whole product.

Settings (currency, shipping origin) still matter for price and weight: how to set up Shopify store settings.

Options vs variants

Option = the question you ask the shopper (Size, Color, Material). Variant = one answer set (Small / Black / Cotton) with its own inventory row.

A product with no options is still one variant behind the scenes—one SKU. You only add options when the customer must choose.

Do not create an option called “SKU” or “Warehouse bin.” Those are internal. Do not use options for engraving text unless you have a defined workflow; line-item properties and apps are a different job.

Limits: check Help Center, do not invent a number

Shopify Help Center has long documented a small option cap—typically three options per product (for example Size, Color, Material). There is a separate cap on how many variants those options can generate. Older tutorials often cite 100 variants. Shopify has raised that variant ceiling for many stores since then. Confirm the numbers in Help Center: variants and in your admin. Do not plan a catalog around a number you memorized from 2022, and do not invent a new limit because a blog rounded up.

If you need a fourth axis (Size + Color + Material + Fit), you are past native options. Split into products, use Combined Listings if your plan and setup support it, or use an options app—knowing apps add complexity. Native three-option products stay easier to theme and report on.

When to split into separate products

Keep one product when variants share photos (except color), description, shipping class, and tax. Split when:

  • Care, ingredients, or legal claims differ.
  • Weight or fulfillment is different enough to break rates.
  • The shopper would never substitute (a phone case for two unrelated models may need two products, not 40 dead variants).
  • You are blowing past option limits by stuffing “Style 1 / Style 2” as fake options.

After you split, group them with collections and tags so navigation still makes sense.

SKU, price, and image per variant

Each variant that you pick from a shelf needs its own SKU. Reusing one SKU across sizes is how warehouse counts lie.

Price can be shared or overridden per variant (a large that uses more material). Weight can differ. Assign media so Color = Ochre does not show the Navy hero. Image habits: how to optimize Shopify product images.

Write one product description for the line. Put variant-specific facts in option names and, if needed, a short note. How to write the parent copy: how to write product descriptions that sell.

Out of stock

Turn Track quantity on per variant. When Medium Navy hits zero, Shopify can hide that variant or show it unavailable depending on theme and inventory policy. Continue selling when out of stock is a deliberate oversell switch—not a default for fashion sizes. Inventory operations: how to manage Shopify inventory.

Do not delete a variant to “clean up” a sold-out size if you will restock. Adjust quantity. Deleting can break links and reports.

Common mistakes

  • Using variants for products that should be separate listings.
  • One SKU for every size.
  • Ignoring Help Center limits until the editor refuses to save.
  • No variant images for color.
  • Publishing a matrix of 80 combinations you do not stock. Launch expects honest SKUs: shopify store launch checklist and how to launch a Shopify store.

What to do next

Theme presentation and SEO for option selectors are separate from this admin job: how to design high-converting Shopify product pages, how to optimize Shopify product pages for SEO, and the Shopify SEO checklist for category and product pages. You can add variants without an agency. If a large option matrix needs catalog design help, AalphaLeo Digital Solutions does Shopify store setup. Phone / WhatsApp: +91 9288621081. Optional. Unique SKUs are not.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need variants for a product that only comes in one size?

No. Leave options off. One product, one SKU, one inventory count.

What if I need more than three options?

Check Help Center first—the option cap is still typically three. Then split products, use Shopify’s current combined-listing features if they apply to your store, or evaluate an options app. Do not fake a fourth option as 50 “Color” values that mix unrelated attributes.

Can each variant have a different weight?

Yes. Set weight on the variant so shipping quotes stay honest. Blank or copied weights cause checkout surprises.

How should sold-out variants appear?

Usually: still visible, not purchasable, unless you hide unavailable variants in the theme. Overselling is a policy choice. Align it with your launch promises, not with a hope that stock will appear.
