A Shopify product description is not a keyword bag and not a manufacturer PDF pasted into the editor. It answers: what this is, why to buy it, the facts, and what happens after payment. Screens change; the job does not. Add the product first: how to add products to Shopify. Field help: adding and updating products.

This page is writing, not layout. Theme blocks and conversion design live in how to design high-converting Shopify product pages. Search listings and on-page SEO live in how to optimize Shopify product pages for SEO and the Shopify SEO checklist for category and product pages.

Quick answer

Write original copy. Lead with who the product is for and what it does. Follow with specs (size, materials, what’s in the box). Add shipping, returns, and care in plain language—or point to the policy pages you already published. Use short paragraphs and bullets so a phone shopper can scan. Do not paste the same manufacturer paragraph every reseller uses. Shopify has warned for years that duplicate catalog copy can hurt how the page is understood in search. Do not stuff the primary keyword into every sentence.

If you are still building the store, the catalog sits after settings: how to create a Shopify store and how to set up Shopify store settings.

What a description has to do

Shoppers arrive from a collection, a search result, an ad, or a tag page. They need enough to decide without a sales call. The description should:

  1. Name the product in human language (match the title, do not invent a second brand name).
  2. State who it is for (shift workers, small apartments, left-handed knitters—be specific).
  3. Separate benefits (what changes for the buyer) from specs (what is measurable).
  4. Cover care, contents, and shipping reality so support tickets do not start at checkout.

Keep Shopify terminology nearby if you confuse product, variant, and collection.

Benefits plus specs (both)

Benefits without facts feel like ads. Specs without benefits feel like a parts list. Pair them.

Weak: “Premium quality luxury feel.” Usable: “Mid-weight cotton jersey (180 GSM) that holds shape after wash. Cut for a regular unisex fit—if you are between sizes, see the chart.”

Put measurements, materials, included accessories, and compatibility in bullets. Put the “why it exists” in two short sentences above the bullets. Do not hide the size of the item in a paragraph of adjectives.

Original copy — do not paste the manufacturer

Supplier catalogs are written for wholesale buyers, or they are reused across every store that sells the same SKU. Shopify’s own guidance has long treated copied manufacturer descriptions as a duplicate-content problem. Rewrite in your voice. Name the use case your store actually serves. If the only differentiator you can write is “fast shipping,” write your real shipping cutoff instead of a slogan.

You still need accurate specs. Inventing fiber content or dimensions is worse than dull copy. Check the carton.

Make it scannable

Most people will not read a wall of text on a phone.

  • First two sentences: what it is and who it is for.
  • Bullets: materials, dimensions, pack contents, variants (point to options; do not re-list every SKU in prose).
  • A short “how to use / care” block.
  • Shipping or digital-delivery sentence that matches your policy pages.

Reuse a structure across similar SKUs, not a pasted paragraph. Change the facts. Group with collections and tags—tags describe attributes, they are not a keyword dump.

Who it is for — say it

“For everyone” is not a customer. “For renters who cannot drill into brick” is. That sentence does more than a keyword stuffed into the H1. Search engines and shoppers both benefit from clear language. Stuffing “shopify product descriptions” or your product keyword into every line does not make the page rank. The operator guide for titles, meta, and internal links is the SEO checklist.

Shipping, care, and after-purchase

If it ships in two boxes, say so. If it is made to order, say the lead time. If it is a textile, say wash temperature. Point to Refund and Shipping pages you created as real policies, not lorem ipsum. Those pages are part of launch: shopify store launch checklist and how to launch a Shopify store.

Do not contradict checkout. If Settings says you do not ship to a country, the description cannot promise worldwide delivery.

What not to do

  • Keyword stuffing and hidden text.
  • Fake compare-at prices in the copy (“worth $400”).
  • Medical or legal claims you cannot stand behind.
  • Pasting another store’s description and changing two adjectives.
  • Promising a conversion rate. Copy is one input among price, photos, and trust.

Images still have to match the words. Optimize them separately: how to optimize Shopify product images. Variants need their own facts when size or color changes the product: how to add product variants in Shopify.

What to do next

Write the first SKU by hand. Then the next ten with the same outline. The Shopify 101 complete guide and the Shopify 101 category map catalog, SEO, and launch around this page.

Frequently asked questions

How long should a Shopify product description be?

Long enough to decide and short enough to scan. A simple accessory might need 150–250 words plus bullets. A technical product may need more specs. Length is not a ranking trophy. Empty padding is worse than a tight 180 words.

Can I use AI to write descriptions?

You can draft with a tool. You still have to verify measurements, materials, and claims against the physical product. Publish only copy you would stand behind in a return dispute.

Where do I put the keyword?

In the title and once in the opening if it is natural. Then write for the buyer. For search listings, meta, and alt text, use the Shopify SEO checklist and how to optimize Shopify product pages for SEO.

Should every variant have its own description?

Usually one product description covers the line, and option names plus images cover color or size. If two options are different products in practice (different care, different legal claims), split them. See how to add product variants in Shopify.
