A Shopify discount strategy is when you reduce price, how (code vs automatic), and whether margin still exists after the cut, transaction fees, and shipping you actually pay. It is not a 20% sitewide code on a store that has never taken an organic order. Shopify documents creating discounts in Help: discounts. Marketing screens around campaigns live under promoting and marketing. Admin labels move; the margin question does not.

Quick answer

Decide the job: first-order incentive, shipping threshold, bundle, or a staffed sale with an end date. Create either a discount code (customer types or clicks a link) or an automatic discount (applies when conditions match—no code). Cap combinations so two 15% offers do not stack into a gift. Price the offer against landed cost, not against a vanity compare-at. Do not run a perpetual “SALE” collection that trains wait-for-markdown. Hub: Shopify 101 category.

Codes vs automatic

Discount codes. Best when the offer is for a channel: email, a partner, a card in the box, a recovery mail. You can limit uses, set a minimum, restrict to customers or products, and expire the code. Unique codes at huge volume (affiliates, one-time VIPs) are when merchants look at apps—native codes cover most first stores.

Automatic discounts. Best when everyone in the condition should get the deal without typing: spend $X ship free, buy two get the third off, 10% off a collection this weekend. Automatic is visible in cart when Shopify shows it; it is also easier to “always on,” which is how you train wait-for-sale.

Shopify’s combination rules (whether two discounts can apply together) are configured in admin and documented in Help. Test a cart with the products and a code before you send the campaign. Theme cart display of discounts is not a substitute for that test.

Do not install a “discount app” to create a 10% code Shopify already supports. Apps belong for loyalty ledgers, unique-code factories, or storefront UX native cannot do—see the marketing apps shortlist.

Margin before the headline percent

Write the offer on paper:

  • Product cost (or landed cost if you import).
  • Shopify plan and card rates for your region (pricing is the US table context; confirm live).
  • Shipping you subsidize if “free shipping” is the discount.
  • Return rate you already see—not a blog’s average.

If 15% off puts the SKU under cash cost, the strategy failed before anyone clicked. “Compare at” prices that were never the selling price are a trust problem, not a tactic.

Free shipping is a discount on logistics. Set a threshold that covers the typical basket, or you pay carrier rates on $12 orders. Shipping setup: shipping rates.

Do not train wait-for-sale

If the homepage always says 20% off, the real price is 20% off. Tactics that avoid that:

  • Time-box automatic discounts (weekend, launch week) and take them down.
  • Use codes in email for people who asked—not a sitewide banner forever.
  • Prefer value (bundle, gift with purchase you can cost) over another percent off the same SKU.
  • Keep a full-price path for shoppers who will pay it.

Abandoned checkout recovery that always includes 15% off teaches abandon-to-save. If you use a code there, make it rare and costed: abandoned carts.

Practical setups (test in admin)

  1. Welcome code — single-use or first-order minimum, sent only with consent. Not the same as a checkout marketing checkbox you ignored.
  2. Minimum subtotal — protects AOV without lying about product price.
  3. Collection-limited automatic — clears a season without discounting the whole catalog.
  4. BXGY — when the third unit’s cost is known.
  5. Staff / wholesale — customer-segment discounts if you will actually maintain the segment.

Create the discount in Discounts (or Marketing, depending on admin). Apply to the right products. Preview checkout. Place a test order. Then put the code in one channel you staff—not five banners plus Meta plus Google on day one.

Paid ads plus a sitewide code is two discounts: media cost and margin. Get tracking right first: Google Ads, Meta ads. Conversion process: CRO framework.

Common mistakes

  • Automatic 20% with no end date.
  • Stacking code + automatic + free shipping until the order is negative margin.
  • Compare-at inflated to make 30% look real.
  • Discounting before launch because the catalog is empty.
  • Measuring “success” as redemptions instead of contribution after fees.

What to do next

Cost one offer. Create it in Discounts. Test checkout. Put it in email or a timed automatic—not both forever. Return to the marketing guide and Shopify 101 complete guide. Go live via the launch checklist.

You can build native discounts without an agency. If you want a second look at offer structure on a live catalog, AalphaLeo Digital Solutions can review that job. Phone / WhatsApp: +91 9288621081. Optional.

Frequently asked questions

Discount code or automatic discount?

Code when the offer is for a list, partner, or recovery mail. Automatic when every qualifying cart should get it without typing. Test combinations in admin.

Can I use discounts on a password store?

You can test. Do not treat a password store as a sale. Public launch is how to launch a Shopify store.

Do I need an app for Shopify discounts?

Not for standard codes and automatic discounts. Apps are for jobs native cannot do. Shortlist: best Shopify marketing apps.

Will a discount raise conversion by a known percent?

This article will not invent one. Watch contribution margin and repeat purchase in your Shopify reports, not a vendor lift claim. Email capture still needs consent: email marketing setup.
