SEO, GEO, and AEO are labels circulating in marketing conversations. They are not ISO standards. Google’s public documentation still talks about Search, crawling, indexing, and useful content. Use the acronyms if they help a meeting. Do not let them become three separate roadmaps that fight each other.
SEO: search engine optimization
Classic SEO is the work of helping people and crawlers find the right URL for a task: technical access, relevant content, internal links, and representation (titles, canonicals, structured data that matches the page). Google’s Search Essentials and SEO starter materials remain the official orientation.
GEO: generative engine optimization
GEO is informal jargon for “be useful to generative answers.” There is no separate Google spec called GEO. The documented overlap is: indexable pages, distinctive non-commodity content, and no fake AI-only markup. See AI Overviews and SEO.
If someone sells “GEO packages” with guaranteed mentions, treat that as advertising, not a protocol.
AEO: answer engine optimization
AEO is informal jargon for “shape the page like an answer”: clear headings, direct explanations, FAQs when you truly have FAQs, and passages that can stand alone. That is ordinary editorial craft. It is not a new crawler.
Do not add FAQ schema to pages without questions and answers. Do not write one-sentence “answers” that omit caveats the rest of the article depends on.
One operating system
Map the acronyms onto one queue:
| Label | Useful translation | FACTASH page |
|---|---|---|
| SEO | Access, relevance, representation | Technical SEO checklist |
| GEO | Distinctive sources generative systems might retrieve | Cited by AI search |
| AEO | Readable structure for people and passage selection | Entity SEO guide |
If your calendar has three owners optimizing the same URL three ways, consolidate. The reader still sees one page.
Language for stakeholders
Say: “We will keep URLs crawlable, write original work for a task, and structure it so a person can scan it.” If you must use GEO or AEO, define them in that sentence. Undefined acronyms are how budgets fragment.
